When lifelong friends Danielle Duboise and Whitney Tingle both found themselves struggling with the physical and emotional toll of burnout, they set out together on a healing journey that transformed their lives and sparked Sakara, their wildly successful plant-based meal delivery service. Beyond eating delicious, organic meals, however, there are many other practices that help hem maintain blissful states of well-being. Here's how they do it:
Work Out Like a Mother
"I go to a studio called FPC for workout classes that are focused on pre and post-natal fitness. It’s changed my body, and I’ve learned so much about my pelvic floor and how to strengthen it and heal diastasis. On top of that, it’s a beautiful community of mothers and teachers, and they encourage you to bring your baby, which is so fun."
Keep Calm with Acupuncture
"Acupuncture was a lifesaver when I was pregnant, and it has carried on as an important self-care practice postpartum. During my last trimester, I went to acupuncture once a week, which helped me stay calm and centered. It was this rare whole hour dedicated to my personal physical and mental health. I felt better just by being in the healing presence of the practitioners."
Sip a Healthier Nightcap
"I love ending the day with our Detox Water Concentrate. It contains 72 trace minerals and chlorophyll to help oxygenate the blood and—as the name suggests—aid the body’s natural detoxification process on a nightly basis. Plus: I love the earthy flavor."
Get Some Nature (in the Middle of the City)
"Walks in Central Park with my family and Zen (our mini Aussie) are so restorative. Central Park is amazing, not just because of the incredible nature, but also—quite simply—because it's there. The fact that a few people got together in the 19th century and decided to block off hundreds of acres for a park is remarkable. It's some of the most expensive real estate in the world, and yet it remains public land that everyone gets to enjoy. That energy is everywhere in the park, and it’s invigorating."
Pop Skin-Boosting Probiotics
"I take our Sakara Probiotic Blend every single day, sometimes doubled up if I’m feeling sick or traveling. When I was dealing with painful cystic acne, I went to every dermatologist and tried every prescription under the sun. But at the root of it, I had a gut issue—not a skin issue. Once I healed my gut through proper nutrition and a high-quality probiotic, I saw dramatic changes. Now I’m confident enough to go makeup-free some days."
Chant to Channel Focus
"When I need to center my thoughts—before a panel, a presentation, or something I might be nervous for— I chant Hare Krishna, and it helps me focus on my breath and give me clarity. I started this exercise after years of practicing Sivananda Yoga and visiting their ashrams. I love the way it makes me feel. Many people think of the yoga asanas as the physical part of the practice, but I've found that chanting also strengthens my voice and lungs (which is great before a speaking event), and also clears my mind."
Dance to De-Stress
"Dancing with my friends is a great de-stressor. I love global beats, disco, or old-school hip hop. Depending on the night, I’ll dance at home or head to Danielle’s husband’s spot et al., which has great music and a '70s-themed costume closet of vintage clothes."
Leave No Unused Vacation Day Behind
"Traveling with my husband helps expand my mind and spirit, and feels nourishing. We just traveled to India over New Year’s and it was incredible. The colors, the flavors, the culture— wow!"
